Everyone's a Great Writer Now! So Why Does Reading Feel So Empty?

AI can make anyone sound like an expert, but it can't fake real knowledge. Unfortunately, we're losing the ability to tell the difference!

For more than 30 years, writing has been an integral part of my profession. It’s a skill I’ve worked hard at, spending countless hours learning how to get a point across clearly and powerfully. But something has changed. All of a sudden, people I know who struggled to string a correct sentence together are publishing flawless articles every single week - sometimes daily!

These are people who never posted a word on LinkedIn (or anything else for that matter!). They had nothing to add to the conversation. Now, they’re inviting people to their weekly newsletters and writing in a style that looks incredibly professional. And it's not just a limited few; it's a viral trend.

As a result, it’s becoming hard to find the motivation to write anymore. The craft I spent a lifetime building can now be imitated by anyone with a mouse and a keyboard. Writing used to be a sign of dedication and clear thinking. Now, when everyone can produce perfect prose in an instant, the real effort feels pointless. Even 'reading' has lost some of its joy, because it’s so hard to know if you’re connecting with a real person or just a machine.

Is This Really Leveling the Playing Field?

People say AI is the great equalizer, giving everyone a voice. But what kind of voice is it? Is it really giving people a fair shot, or is it just helping them look the part without putting in the work?

There’s a big difference between having a tool that helps you express your hard-earned knowledge and having a tool that creates the illusion of knowledge for you. We are heading into a world where it’s becoming incredibly easy to fake expertise. When the person who has spent years learning a subject sounds exactly like someone who just spent two minutes on a prompt, we have a problem.



 

Where Did the Personal Voice Go?

One of the biggest issues with this flood of new content is how similar it all sounds. It’s grammatically perfect, clean, and well-structured, but it’s often completely soulless. It lacks a unique point of view.

Real writing has personality. It’s shaped by a person’s experiences, their mistakes, and their unique way of seeing the world. It’s the personal stories and the human touch that make writing memorable and impactful. An AI has no life experience. It can't tell you about a time it failed and what it learned. It can give you information, but it can’t give you wisdom.

The True Cost of Effortless Perfection

This goes much deeper than just writing. It touches the very reason we strive to be better. Why does anyone spend years mastering a skill, whether it’s coding, carpentry, or crafting an argument? For the respect and credibility that comes from genuine mastery.

But what happens to a society when the rewards for dedicated effort are made instantly available to those who expend none? The incentive for that deep, hard work begins to disappear. History shows that progress is driven by individuals who labor meticulously to gain real distinction. If that distinction can be faked, the crucial engine that motivates us to innovate and improve starts to break down. This is how a tool meant to be a great equalizer risks becoming a great terminator - eliminating the need, and eventually the desire, for genuine human mastery.

Let’s be honest: we never needed more voices. We needed better ones. AI may have made everyone a writer, but it hasn’t made anyone a thinker. And in a world of endless noise, clear thinking is the only thing that truly sets anyone apart. So, the next time you see a perfectly structured post from someone who, six months ago, struggled with basic grammar, ask yourself: Is this real insight, or just an echo wrapped in silk?

In the end, we are left at a crossroads, forced to decide what we truly value. Will we be a society that celebrates the beautiful illusion, or will we do the harder work of seeking out and rewarding genuine, earned knowledge, even when it’s less polished? This very modern dilemma - distinguishing between true understanding and its convincing imitation - was addressed more than 1400 years ago with perfect clarity in a deeply insightful and relevant verse from the holy Quran:

"Say: Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only people of understanding take heed."
