What are your key leadership attributes? The beliefs and behaviours that make you unique and successful. If you can recognise these patterns you can use them more effectively. These are your unique gifts which can be polished and extended.

Here is a tool to help identify your leadership attributes.

First pen down as many as you want. If they turn out to be too many cluster them or pick the most important half a dozen.

Most leadership attributes evolve around situations and people. So put down against each how and when did you demonstrate them and how that helped the situation / person / organisation.

Allow yourself at least 60 minutes of quality time for this exercise since deep diving into yourself needs that. This exercise is only for you – so display your integrity to yourself.

If things don’t come to mind quickly it probably means that you have not observed yourself enough. Stay with it. Answers will come.

Here are a few examples to set you off.

I have demonstrated this by ensuring that I treat everyone equally, give everyone a fair chance …….

This has helped to have a relatively frictionless team as evidenced by …… , a reputation for honesty ……

As a leader I believe in being authentic

I have demonstrated this by admitting mistakes, being transparent about decisions ……

This has helped in being stress free, building credibility ……..

As a leader I believe in power by influence

I have demonstrated this by minimal use of authority, developing my persuasive powers,…….

This has helped in building ownership of ideas in team, better lateral management …….

As a leader I believe that results count

I have demonstrated this by clearly defining outcomes, focusing on the result …..

This has helped in having a high performance team, growth for self, ……..
