Crossing the ocean of misery

Human mind cannot contain either joy or misery. It cannot just hold and remain, it always expresses. If you are miserable you talk about it and if you are happy then also you talk about it. You talk more when you are miserable. If you just look at your phone bills, you will notice that more than sixty percent of your phone bills are on account of talking about your problems and that too to people who cannot do anything about it. By sharing your misery, it doesn’t reduce. By not sharing your joy, it reduces. Share your problems only with the Divine, not with everyone - that just increases the problem. Share your joy with everybody.

We often get attached to misery too. You know why? When you were a child, you made a sad face, immediately someone patted you on the back and tried to cheer you up. You were crying and parents attended to you. So there is a subtle sense of wanting attention whenever you are miserable. You have to get over that, grow beyond that and only then can you gain the power to renounce. There is a story of Mullah Nasurudin. His wife was pregnant and it was the time of delivery. But the baby was not coming out. When doctor told this to Mullah Nasurudin, he ran to the market, bought a toy, and kept that toy in front of his wife. He said, “After all this is my child, so he will surely come out with greed”. All our life you keep on running behind things with the hope of getting something. You keep on looking for some kind of gain. How would such person experience happiness? Neither does a greedy person get happiness nor does a person who is bombarded with too many desires. The one who relaxes in his consciousness is happy. One, who is centered, experiences true happiness. I am not saying there is no happiness in the outer world, but the happiness you get when you go within is incomparable.

Do Self-study, observe the self; Who are you? You have purified the body, but are you the body? You have made your mind light, but are you the mind? Are you your thoughts? Are you your emotions? Who are you? This self-study leads you upwards to the universe that is unknown to you. Self-study takes you a step further, and it eliminates misery and suffering of the mind.

You don’t have time to reflect about yourself, that is the problem. You are in a whirlpool of influence of so many people around you and they all have their opinions - media, television, other people etc, and when you are bombarded by their opinions, your mind starts sinking.

Have you taken time off from all this just to relax for a while and  let your mind move to
its source?

So do “Swaadhyaaya” - self-study. Look into the motives behind your actions. Often you don’t go for things that you really want. You go for things because others want it. And many times what you want, you are not clear because you never looked into yourself.

If you keep doing the same thing again and again, knowing that it brings you misery, you really don’t understand that it brings you misery or you think it brings you some pleasure. Craving for pleasure, and non-awareness that it is going to cause you misery are the two things which makes you commit the same mistake again and again. That’s why it is called a habit. Habits don’t give you pleasure but they inflict pain by not following them. Freedom means breaking free from the patterns of life that cause suffering.

Imbibe this knowledge. Independence means depending on the inside. Your independence is only when you are dependent on the inside. You are miserable when you want things from others for your comfort. How much can you take? And even if you take everything, is it of any use? I am independent means I am inner- dependent. So I want nothing from anybody. Just this aphorism, a reminder of this time and again, will take your mind, which is sticking to the outside to come to its center. You will feel the relief. Misery simply means you are stuck to the outside. Joy means you are in your element which is inside.

If you depend on others for your comfort, you lose your joy. First, have this faith that nature will provide whatever you need or you deserve, It will never happen that nature doesn’t provide you with what you need. Secondly, you want nothing from anybody. And third whatever you have, be it intelligence, great voice, qualifications or skill is only for others and not for you. You serve others as much as you can, that’s it. Where is the misery then!
